Altogether a fascinating view of the art of printing at the beginning of the 20th century. Each volume has a unique number stamped in that links it to the buyer for purchases. Frank Parker from 1918 - 1919 during which he was awarded the War Cross of France with Palm, Commander of the Legion of Honor of France with second Palm of War Cross, Commander of the Order of the Crown of Belgium, D.S.M., and Third Palm on War Cross. Parker served in a tour of Lorraine, the second Battle of the Marne, the Battle of St. Mihiel Salient, the Battle between the Meuse and the Argonne Forest, and more. This is the first addition to the Endgrain Editions since 2003, and it is a major return to the series. It is a celebration of the work of Simon Brett documenting his fifty plus years as an engraver. Simon is acknowledged as one of the masters of wood engraving of the past half-century. With 134 engravings printed from the wood, an introduction by the artist, and a chronological catalogue of the more than 1,000 engravings Simon has so far engraved, this is a major work of 250 pages, and is certain to be an important reference on Simon’s work as well as being a splendid book from this important private press. According to the printer: "Our fascination with [Wagener's] work is a response to the meticulous attention to detail which imbues all his engravings, combined with a ‘democracy of aesthetic’ which allows both realism and abstraction equal weight. In a Parenthesis review of Wagener’s early book with Peter Koch, Zebra Noise with a Flatted Seventh, Simon Brett said ‘No one else I know of is making such avant-garde grand opera in wood-engraved prints.’" Richard Wagener (1944 - ) is a Californian wood engraver known best for his depictions of nature and animals, often juxtaposed against abstract imagery. 1911. The French artist George Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the most sophisticated and prolific illustrators and designers of his era. His Art Deco creations using the techniques of pochoir printing were both modern and classic, highly stylized, and extremely colorful. He became extremely popular after his first exhibition at the age of twenty-nine, and was widely sought after to design theater and ballet costumes, illustrate books, and most notably to produce haute couture fashion illustrations. He was somewhat forgotten after his early death at age fifty, but there has been strong renewed interest in his work in recent years. This beautiful pochoir illustration is a Greek fan composition that had appeared in an album done for the French fashion designer, Jeanne Paquin, who was the first woman to head a major Parisian fashion house. The album, limited to 300 copies, comprised seven plates done by Paul Iribe, Georges Lepape, and Barbier. Of the seven plates this was the only one by Barbier. It is a classical image of Pan playing his pan-pipes, and a dancer and a couple in a woods. The design and colors are quintessential Barbier, with its stylized design and deeply rich colors. There is a small black and white drawing of Pan on the lower right border. Printed on a 13.5 x 17.5 sheet. A few light spots on the white borders otherwise in near fine condition. ORIG/072916.

The design and colors are quintessential Barbier, with its stylized design and deeply rich colors. The illustration is 4.25 x 6.25 inches and is mounted on a 6.5 x 8 inch sheet of paper. Both the illustration and the sheet of paper have vertical cuts to the bottom left and right edges. The paper sheet has a few light spots on its right edge not affecting the illustration, which is in near fine condition. ORIG/080316.

Their books address a wide range of subjects from the universe to gardening to opera to Yiddish and more. Most are letterpress printed, many have moveable pieces, and all are illustrated. Number 3 of 10 copies. In her colophon, Sibyl Rubottom gives her love and thanks “to the father I never knew who named me Sibyl hoping I would be shrewd in business. That did not occur, but I did end up making books.” This beautiful book is about five ancient Sibyls, including how they were depicted in Western art. These Sibyls are the Cumean, Delphic, Erythraean, Persian, and the Libyan. They offered prophecies, often through the use of leaves, as being from the thoughts of the gods. There is a brief description of each, accompanied by an intaglio leaf print and a reproduction of each Sibyl from the work of Michelangelo (four plates) or Velasquez (one plate). Each Sibyl is presented within a fold-out page with the description on the facing page and the plate and illustration inside the fold. Bound in red cloth with green spine, with title and author on front cover. The book was printed on Dutch etching paper in Bodoni, Bernard Modern, Albertus, and Patatino types. There are eight intaglio prints, each signed by the book artist. Housed in a brown paper covered case lined with the same red cloth as the book covers. Various spices are described by definition, quotes, or history, and accompanied by lovely images on tan color pages that were hand-tinted with spice dyes. Some of the pages had an "intoxicating 14 runs through the press." The accordion text pages are encased in stiff paper covers, with the top flap cut out in the shape of leaves. Hall was an American poet, and would have been just 19 years old when she received the book. George Sheringham was best known as a painter and theater designer, but also was a book illustrator. There is a color frontispiece and twenty three full page color illustrations protected by tissue guards. Bound in the original cream cloth, with the front cover elaborately decorated in cream, blues, and pink by Sheringham. Spine faded, corners bumped, and some chipping and marks of handling to covers. Interior pages and illustrations are clean and bright with occasional foxing. 70 pages. LIT/090411. Very Good.
New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc., . Hardcover. Inscribed by the playwright. First edition of this well-received Broadway play, which ran in New York between November 1931 and February 1932. Berhman (1893-1973) was a prolific playwright and screenwriter, perhaps best known for his “high comedies” which were so popular in the 1930s. This copy was inscribed to Dame Nellie Burton, Berhman’s landlady when he stayed in London. Miss Burton ran a famous lodging house on Half Moon Street, where lived, among other notables, Siegfried Sassoon and Robbie Ross, the latter being one of Oscar Wilde’s closest friends. The inscription reads “For Miss Burton, with love from her devoted Sam, London Apr. 1932.” Laid in is a typed letter to Berhman from the Stanley Rose bookstore, informing him that the copy of Brief Moment he had sent to Miss Burton at her address on Half Moon Street was returned to sender, “party gone away.” Bound in red cloth with title and author in black on front cover and spine. The interior is bright and clean with some light spotting to fore-edge. The jacket has small tears to top and bottom of spine. In near fine condition with very good jacket. AN IMPORTANT PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed “Mrs Proctor, with RB’s affectionate regards June 27 ‘80.” Anne Proctor’s husband, the barrister and poet Bryan W. Proctor (who wrote under the pseudonym Barry Cornwall), was the dedicatee of Browning’s poem “Columbe’s Birthday” (1844). The Proctors were among the Brownings’ closest friends. Proctor and John Forster anonymously edited the first selection from Browning’s works in the 1860s. Near fine in original brown cloth with gilt title to spine. Light rubbing to edges and corners. . Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) is considered one of the most important female photographers and one of the great portraitists in the history of photography. She came late to photography, not starting until 1863 when she was 48 years old. Because of her close connections in Victorian England she was able to photograph many of the luminaries of her time, often in costume. Photograph of Anne Thackeray, albumen, on the original mount. Daughter of novelist William Makepeace Thackeray, Anne Thackeray Ritchie (1837-1919) was herself a noted novelist and memoirist. She was indirectly related to the photographer, as Julia Margaret Cameron was great-aunt of Virginia Woolf and Anne Thackeray was Virginia's step-aunt. This photograph is from the collection of William Derwett (1834-1900), described as an “engineer” who lived at Chalfont, near the Camerons’ former home at Freshwater. Derweet and his family apparently moved to the Isle of Wight in 1894 and became leaders in the small Quaker community there (Julian Cox and Colin Ford, "Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs," 2003, 500). This collection includes a total of 64 issues starting with January 1944 (Volume 23, Number 4) and going through December 1951 (Volume 31, Number 3). Each volume of the Shield includes eight issues (Oct - May). Original covers of each issue are bound in. Topics address World War II, Japan, Hiroshima, the Phillipines, Latin America, America, Africa, Negro education, postwar relations, communism, personal stories of young missionaries around the world, and more. Easthampton MA: Cheloniidae Press, 2014. Hardcover. Number 15 of 150 copies. Signed and numbered by the book artist Alan James Robinson. This wildflower alphabet book is the first book issued by Alan’s highly regarded Cheloniidae Press in several years, and the first produced using the Giclee printing process, which he calls a “new direction” in our ever changing world. It is intended to be the first in a series of Natural History Abecedary Editions. There is also a Fine Art edition of Wildflowers with twenty-eight original watercolors. The illustrations for this Giclee edition are printed from the artwork created for the Fine Art watercolor edition. The illustrations in this edition show the lovely renditions of a flower, often accompanied by a butterfly or other insect, for each letter of the alphabet. Each page is headed by a calligraphic letter in red, designed originally by Master Calligrapher Suzanne Moore for the press’s A Fowl Alphabet in 1986. This accordion style book is bound in pale yellow cloth with the title in gilt to the front cover. It is housed in a green cloth slipcase with the title in gilt to the spine. Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, 1982. Hardcover. UNIQUE COPY WITH A SET OF THE 26 ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY ALAN JAMES ROBINSON. There were 300 copies of this book published; 200 were regular copies, 50 were deluxe copies with quarter leather binding and 50 others bound in full leather. The deluxe editions were issued with a set of proofs of the wood engravings and a set of proofs of the line-cut initials, with a large calligraphic manuscript initial beneath each image. The wood engraving proofs are lettered and signed by Robinson, and the line-cut proofs are signed both by Robinson and the calligrapher, Elizabeth Curtis. This copy shows some variation from the copies described in the prospectus. The colophon has been signed and numbered VI of L and internally seems to be a straightforward copy of the deluxe full leather edition. The binding varies somewhat from that pictured in the prospectus but uses many of the same elements. Also, the chemise is thicker that the regular chemise because it contains the 26 pencil drawings. This may have been a special copy prepared by Robinson for a particular subscriber/collector. This wonderful abecedary illustrates each letter of the alphabet with a masterful wood engraving by Robinson. Each animal is described at the bottom of its page in texts chosen primarily from the earliest first-hand accounts of the animal depicted. The descriptions are printed in red. The printed source of each text is identified, and at the end of the book there is a detailed and useful bibliography of these sources. A page with a small, different illustration of the animal precedes each animal’s page, with the calligraphic letter written in red by Curtis. The animals depicted are often wondrous and strange, and some, such as the basilisk, may never have actually existed. This is a two volume folio (including a chemise containing an additional suite of illustrations, and the group of original pencil drawings). The bound volume is in full red morocco, done by David Bourbeau of the Thistle Bindery. The covers have a large central, slightly sunken panel, with the title in red and black and with a Sea Turtle device blocked in blind (Cheloniidae is the name for a species of sea turtles). The proofs contained in the chemise are unbound as issued within the original red morocco-backed, linen cloth covered boards. Both volumes are housed in a red morocco-backed cloth covered box, with the spine lettered and dated in gilt and a small Sea Turtle device in blind. “The blocks were cut by the artist at the Cheloniidae Press & printed by Harold P. McGrath in the summer of 1982.... Mackenzie-Harris set the types in monotype with some hand-setting by Arthur Larson. The text was compiled and annotated by Laurie Block. This is a delightful new edition of Lewis Carroll's famous poem, The Hunting of the Snark. It was produced by a writer, artist, and book designer and printers who are ardent and well-known Carroll admirers. The Cheshire Press was formed by book designer and printer George Walker in 1991. The press began when he and two colleagues produced new editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Edward Wakeling, who wrote the introduction, is an internationally known authority on Carroll. In addition to writing a recent biography of him, Wakeling also created a comprehensive catalogue raisonne of over 1000 photographs taken by amateur photographer Carroll. Byron W. Sewell is a prolific illustrator, author and bibliographer of works associated with Lewis Carroll. For this edition of Snark, Sewell created new illustrations inspired by contemporary carte-de-visit photographs that were so popular in Victorian England. He has one for each character in the poem, adapting images from actual photographs. They are ideal depictions for this fantastic nonsense poem by Lewis Carroll, written when he was forty-four years old. Bound in maroon cloth with title in gilt to spine and on cover label. Handprinted in New Caledonia type on Bfk Rives Cream paper. The printing was completed by George Walker and Andy Malcolm, and the book design and layout were by Walker. An original print inscribed and signed by Sewell is inserted in a sleeve on the front pastedown. Housed in a slipcase in the same maroon cloth with gilt title on cover. Loomis Dean was an acclaimed “Life Magazine” photographer who had 52 “Life” covers during his career. This book is the chronicle of the time he spent with Ernest Hemingway in 1960, which was only a year before the writer committed suicide. It is inscribed in black marker on the half title page, “To Phyllis + Bill Gaylor/ who chose Spain/ for their honeymoon!/ Best regards, Loomis Dean/ Venice ‘90” In full color illustrated glossy paper wrappers. The interior high gloss pages are clean and bright and filled with color photographs of Hemingway and bullfighting. The book also contains a typed and signed letter on Dean’s stationery dated “September 30, 1994.” The letter is accompanied by 8 original photographs (mentioned in the letter) taken by Dean when in Spain. Anne Covell is a book artist and hand papermaker living in San Diego, CA. She has studied Asian and Western papermaking techniques with Timothy Barrett, and has taught for numerous professional organizations including the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory, Penland School of Crafts, and the University of Georgia study abroad program in Cortona, Italy, among others. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be seen in a growing list of private collections, special collections libraries, and museums worldwide. In her colophon Anne writes: "I first became interested in the Japanese beetle in 2012 during a particularly hot and dry summer in Iowa City. Perhaps it was a result of the season or of my having moved to a new home ripe with some of the beetle's most preferred foods, but I became overwhelmed by its pervasive, relentless assault on my garden. As the summer wore on, I began finding leaf remains gathering at the bases of trees...as if it were fall. Their presence was out of place; out of season. But when I began to look more closely, what struck me was the beauty of form that the beetle had inadvertently left behind. Starved of oxygen and drained of color, these leaf skeletons would soon crumble and return to the earth. But, for a moment they existed between realms and reflected a loss that spoke to the complexity of the natural world." The book contains 12 folios of 100% Japanese Gampi hand-dyed with persimmon tannin and treated with konnyaku to mimic the sound and texture of withering foliage. The illustrations of leaves, berries, and twigs were letterpress printed from drawings by Anne. This lovely and scarce volume is Crane's only book of poetry. It includes 39 black and white designs by Crane that were engraved by Emery Walker, W. Boutall, or Arthur Leverett. Bound by Putnam's & Sons in three quarter brown leather and cream paper boards, with Art Nouveau style gilt design and title to spine. Very light rubbing to joints and edges of covers otherwise very good. Some spotting to paper boards, including a very small red mark on back board. Interior text and illustrations are bright and clean except for some mild aging to some margins and the fore edge. White ribbon bookmark. Leather on interior pastedowns have left brown offset to ffep. t.e.g. Previous owners signature in ink, inscription by original owner and embossed owner stamp on ffep.
