Nolli
Philadelphia: Alice Austin, 2010. Paperback. Number 23 of 60 copies, signed by both artists. A map-book collaboration with Philadelphia photographer and graphic designer Jon Snyder. This single-sheet, meander fold book was inspired by the artists' stay as visiting artists at the American Academy of Rome, studying the 1748 Nolli map of Rome. The book explores textural layers of Rome through the experience of the Nolli map, executed through watercolors, drawings and photographs. The red line that continues throughout the book is the city wall and is shown on the reverse side of the map in white. Includes a watercolor of Bramante's Tempietto, photographic images of Campidoglio, images of the first century pyramid of Caius Cestius, an architectural plan for St. Peter's, and more. Offset-printed on a Heidelberg Kors single color press at the Borowsky Center for Publication Arts at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. The book is printed in full color on a single sheet of paper, front and back, and folded into a book form that can be opened and displayed in numerous ways. Housed in an integrated paper folder, printed in the same color as the verso of the book, with a descriptive sheet explaining each panel included. The title is printed on the front panel. Size: 5 x 5.5 x .25 inches. Alice Austin is a printmaker, book artist and painter living and working in Philadelphia.
