It captures both the complexity and simplicity of nature by juxtaposing dimensional paper grass texture and a quote about nature and wonder. The book is not a reprinting of all of Whitman’s words, but an art object that encapsulates the feeling of Whitman." Her evocative work is done as a box that opens like a traditional book. The inside front cover and back cover are covered with cream paper that includes quotes from Whitman along with his image. Inside of the box/book are several spiky rows of grass leaves crafted from green paper. The box is covered with green paper with the title, author and press name in a lighter shade of green. Beatrice Coron creates a charming papercut work to illustrate the poem "Le Mot et la Chose" (The Word and the Thing) written by The Abbot of Lattaignant (1697-1779). "Although his name is forgotten, the verses written by the man who was nicknamed in his lifetime 'The great songwriter' have passed through the centuries" [poesie.net].The poem is addressed to "Madame" and Coron's papercut depicts Madame being addressed by the gentleman who composed the poem. Inserted in the folder holding the papercut illustration is what appears to be a charred letter that unfolds to reveal the text of the poem. New York: Béatrice Coron, 2001. One of 12 copies. In this lovely book Béatrice Coron illustrates and decorates this poignant poem, "Sardines a l'Huile" (Sardines in Oil) by Georges Fourest. Fourest (1864-1945) was a well-known French writer and poet. His poem describes the sad fate of sardines in their oil filled tins and imagines them freed after death to ascend to a paradise for fish where they may swim and pray for us. Coron combines her papercutting artistry with handmade papers for this book. Ink jet printed. In a cloth covered binding with a cut-out to front cover to display the title. The rear pastedown has a surprising color diorama of fish swimming in the sea. A silver string with a tiny metal fish attaches the text pages to the binding. In fine condition. Measures 5 x 6 inches. Israel: Even Hoshen, 2009. Someck, Ronny. Hardcover. Numbered and signed by the author and printer. A collection of five poems by Ronny Someck about ballet with two hand-colored illustrations. Someck is an Israeli poet, musician, and artist who has won multiple awards for his poetry including the Prime Minister's Award, the Hans Berghhuis prize for poetry, and the Yehuda Amichai Award for Hebrew poetry. He is internationally renowned with poems published in over thirty-five languages and ten books of poetry published in English. The Even Hoshen press was founded in 1994 by Uzi Agassi, who was later joined by his son Ido. Their work is letterpress printed on high quality paper with hand made bindings and illustrations. Pointe Shoes is a dos-a-dos structure printed in both English and Hebrew. It is bound in black cloth boards with inset cloth ballet slippers to both boards and decorative pink and black ribbons to spine. The center of both signatures features four black and pink flourishes. Printed on Grandee paper and handset in Alt-Mediaval and Margalit type. Housed in a black cloth slipcase. A fine production. Portland, OR: Anne Greenwood, 2016. Number 2 of 12 copies in the special edition portfolio signed and numbered by the book artist. There were also 138 copies of the chapbook. This beautiful and complex work was inspired by the poetry of the Portland poet and seamstress Hazel Hall (1886-1924) and pays homage to her to writings and resilience. She survived either scarlet fever or a fall at the age of 12 and used a wheelchair for the rest of her short life. The poems are republished by permission from The Collected Poems of Hazel Hall. From the colophon: "The special edition portfolio is made of crinoline; it is machine sewn, hand-dyed in fustic, and pressure-printed with machine-stitched text from poems originally written by Hall and then pieced together by Anne Greenwood. The chapbook cover is machine-stitching on crinoline; the under print is pressure-printed, hand-stitched embroidery with pochoir and the book is hand-bound using the pamphlet stitch. The decorations are hand-stitched embroidery sigils by Greenwood and Shannon Ayuyu pressure printed on washi paper. The tapestry is made of crinoline hand-dyed in madder, fustic, cochineal and indigo, with hand stitching and pochoir. The applique: the moon is pressure-printed, found, hand-made doily, and the poem Loneliness is written by Hall and printed with a polymer plate. The machine-stitched texts are cut-ups of Hazel Hall’s poetry made by Shannon Ayuyu and Anne Greenwood. The printing is all by Clare Carpenter (2016) in Portland, Oregon." Anne Greenwood is a well-known artist who has exhibited widely and whose works can be found in museum and library collections around the country. She was born on the high Dakota Plains and was led to an art degree by her artist grandmother. In 1990 she moved to Portland, Oregon and began her career as an artist and horticulturalist. Anne’s artwork explores an interest in folk art and speaks of her kinship with the natural world and how this influences her connection to daily life. In 2002, Anne set up a textiles studio integrating handwork, book arts, and textiles into an interdisciplinary practice. From Anne's artist's statement: "My artistic practice navigates an infinite network of connections: narrating the simple and complex, physical and ephemeral, past and present, within the context of place, history, and transformation. I form relationships that expand and fortify admiration and reverence, leading to the discovery of new truths about the world around us." Minneapolis: Indulgence Press, 2007. Hardcover. 1 of 26 deluxe lettered copies. This is Letter W. Signed by author and book artist. This book contains 31 previously unpublished poems by the highly regarded poet Michael Dennis Browne. The poems are short and intended to elicit larger thoughts by the reader. Inspired by his love of music, Schilling designed the book to create a meditative environment through the placement of poems and photographs on the page. The book structure acts as a composition around the lines of text to float the poems along the way. The deluxe edition of 26 copies is printed by letterpress in Reykjavik and Philosophia type on MacGregor & Vinzani handmade paper. The pages are French folded and include cyanotype photographic prints; they are sewn with exposed cords laced into red oak boards. Minneapolis: Indulgence Press, 2012. Portfolio. Number 7 of 10 copies. Signed and numbered by poet and illustrator. This is one of several books produced by Wilber "Chip" Schilling, owner of the Indulgence Press, in collaboration with author-artist Thomas Rose. In this book they created a beautiful and mysterious work that combines Rose's haunting photographs with the poetry of Lo Ch'ing, a noted modern poet from China. In his foreword, Rose states that "art deals with primary intention and those aspects of objects and space that are unavailable to logic. His images are constructed from various sources including shadows and reflections. They are illusions, reflections in glass. Lo Ch'ing's poems give these images...depth and richness." The pairings of the photographs and poems are open-ended and ambiguous, allowing for conjecture as to how the images and text meet. The eight photographic prints are originals by Rose, and Lo Ch’ing wrote the interpretive poems for this book, with his original brushwork and translations. They were printed letterpress from plates by Schilling. Each image is printed in color on a fine woven paper. Each poem is printed in Chinese and English along with the striking black brushwork on a light and semi-transparent paper that slightly reveals the image beneath. The elephant folio sized sheets are housed in a green and black cloth portfolio with diagonal boards that fasten with a black bone closure. Bennington, VT: The Bird Press, 2019. Number 2 of 30 copies, signed and numbered by Thorsten Dennerline. Founded in 1997 by Thorsten Dennerline, The Bird Press is an artist-run publishing project that has focused on hand printed artists’ books. All projects utilize some inherent aspect of the book and often take the form of open-ended collaborations with writers. Each project is a response to the last, both in form and content, in order for the work to continually to evolve. Poetry, broadly defined, is a major inspiration for most of the work. They produce editions of between 15-40 copies, utilizing various print media including: flatbed offset lithography, stone lithography, etching, letterpress, wood blocks, and digital pigment printing. The Bird Press books are represented in many library collections, including The New York Public Library, Stanford University, Smith College, Yale University, The Library of Congress, The Getty Research Foundation, and The National Gallery. This book contains visual collaboration by Thorsten Dennerline working with six poets, each on a 4 page section. Each section has a stunning visual inventiveness that complements the poet's words and meaning. Most of the poems include its English translation. Susanne Jorn, who selected the poets included, writes in her introduction: " I have chosen six distinctive Danish poetic voices for an art project in which words and images encounter one another in widely different dialogues. The six poets' diverging views of the world represent new contemporary Danish poetry as a whole." In the afterword, Anne-Marie Mai says: "What Dennerline and the poets have created here is a new artwork, an object in the world, an artist book, where texts and visual elements interact, challenging the book medium." This folio book was created using stone, late, and offset lithography, metal and polymer letterpress, woodcuts, handmade and machine made papers and is hand bound. The colophon cites the several printers, artists, and others who contributed to this beautiful achievement. Bound in white paper covers with an open spine and the letters NDP on the cover. (London): Sadie Coles HQ, (1997). Paperback. Number 29 of 50 copies. Signed by both authors on title page in pencil. A collection of fifty love poems by English artists Thomson (1966) and Lowe (1967), who are known best for their humorous and sometimes offensive installations pieces. Their work often involves recreating elements from historical artworks by using everyday objects such as cigarettes or whiskey bottles to make statements about popular English culture. Fitting with their visual art, these poems are terse, crude, and very funny. They poke fun at the seriousness of the love poetry genre with verses like: "Tonight I want you more, than any other, it's crazy I know, after you left me for, me brother." San Francisco: Terry Turrentine, 2020. One of ten copies, signed by the photographer and book artist Terry Turrentine Two copies are artist's proofs and one is a handling copy. Although she grew up in a family whose traditions included guns and hunting, as an adult Terry became an esteemed artist and wildlife photographer, specializing in capturing spectacular photographic images of birds. Her previous artist's books were of snowy owls, egrets, and gannets. This latest work offers magnificent images of falcons and a message of hope at this challenging time in our history. She writes in her colophon: " Widening Circles celebrates the ferocious beauty of the falcon, and the interdependent relationship of all beings to each other. Some may see the portraits of falcons in their protective hoods as disturbing. But those familiar with the ancient art of falconry know the hoods are a means to protect the bird from the assault of outside stimuli, as they are extremely sensitive to light, sounds, color, and motion. This is why falcons are such fearsome predators. All predators and their prey maintain the balance of nature and are essential for the world as we know it to exist. It is the natural order of things that there is destruction and rebirth in every second of every day. The ultimate predator, mankind, however, often abuses the privilege of living off the resources of this planet, and upsets the natural balance, causing extreme destruction. As a result, we are witnessing a death spiral of the climate, of the social order, and of the basic balance we need to survive as a species." Terry says of the Rilke poem, "Widening Circles," printed in the book in both English and German: "Over 100 years ago, this was also the observation of Rilke, as he saw the degradation of some of the cities he visited. He could only find solace in God and the wonder of nature - and he dedicated his timeless love poems to both." She concludes: "Life, death, and renewal - each stage is fluid. I believe the sublime gift of living is its constant change, its eternal cycles, and our capacity for transcending destruction through creativity."
