In her artist's statement Schwartzott writes that as a collector of Rubaiyats she began to toy with creating her own version in 2006. "The book is divided into seven segments, each separated by a divider of hand-marbled Japanese paper. The first contains the title page and introduction and the last an artist's statement, bibliography and colophon. The remaining five are dedicated to the seventy-five quatrains of FitzGerald's first edition. Each contains a vellum window, reminiscent of a Persian archway that opens to reveal my version of a miniature painting." Bound in light blue Japanese cloth with an intricate wood cut out to front board. The pristine interior was laser printed with archival ink onto Mohawk Via vellum and Moab Entrada paper. The prints were then finished with color pencil, paint, gold and silver leaf. Housed in clamshell box covered in the same cloth as the book. Rhiannon Alpers is a well-known and highly regarded book artist, papermaker, and letterpress printer. She has exhibited internationally, and her edition and one-of-a-kind artist books are produced under the Gazelle and Goat Press imprint. Rhiannon has taught academic courses at San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts (San Francisco), University of San Francisco, and Columbia College Chicago, Dominican University. She has also taught workshops for adult centers such as San Francisco Center for the Book, Penland School of Crafts, Guild of Bookworks, Book Arts LA, Focus on Book Arts, San Diego Book Arts, Center for Book and Paper in Chicago, and at her own studio in Denver. In 2015 and 2017 she received the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts Jurors' Recognition of Merit for her editioned artist books.

This is a stunning production and also a mystical book of poetry from the book artist, written in collaboration with Julia Alpers. She describes the book in its prospectus: "Whispering Stones explores the concepts of heartache, loss, betrayal and the passage of time through hardship. Using two stones to represent two sisters, one as the moon and the other a large boulder on earth. The siblings each experience life changing grief, erosion and endings in different ways. The poem unfolds as they whisper their stories and woes across the night sky of distant places. The shared conversations are offered as gifts in the deep of the night." This intricate book was created using a combination of letterpress polymer plates and mono-printed forms. It uses hand paper-cutting in a double-layer carousel-style false accordion binding. The papers used in the book are handmade Khadi Natural Cotton. The artist used Thai kozo natural paper for the back layer, and handmade denim and cotton paper that she made to create the carousel style binding. The dark blue covers are made of Ultra Suede panels with a natural mica stone inlay. The dark blue clamshell box is made with two styles of indigo-dyed Cave Paper, one that includes dispersed mica flecks. The book is accompanied by a copy of the prospectus and a typed sheet titled "Care for your Artist Book." It provides instruction for caring for the Ultra Suede covers and the Cave Paper box. This mini pop-up book is a charming and colorful open edition of this well-known children's rhyme. The book has a hexagonal shape, with an illustration of Humpty Dumpty on the front cover and a magnificent albeit unexplained castle on the back cover. As they are opened, each of the four double-sided pages unfolds to show a picture of Humpty and lines from the text of the poem as he climbs the wall, falls from it, and all the king's men could not put him together again. Taking inspiration from a 15th century manuscript, calligrapher Maryanne Grebenstein has created an unique book that has been lettered, decorated, gilded, and bound by hand. Using the same materials and techniques employed by scribes for centuries, Grebenstein carefully letters each word, uses raised 23K gold leaf, and hand paints each border decoration. The page proportions are kept to the traditional ratio, utilizing the centuries old ‘gold rule’ established during the Renaissance. Each page has a similar but not identical border design, following the design principal utilized in the prayer book. Written on Zerkall ingres paper. Beautifully bound by Samuel Feinstein in full blue Niger Oasis goatskin with gilt title to spine and front cover. The front cover features a rose onlay in red and green leather. Portland, OR: Anne Greenwood, 2023. Softcover. Number 2 of 4 copies signed and numbered in stitching by the book artist. Well-known horticulturist and artist Anne Greenwood Rioseco created Nowhere to convey her sense of wonder at the complexity, interdependence, and beauty of constantly transforming ecosystems, both tiny and vast. This complex book chronicles the physiological characteristics of lichens channeling between the personal, the scientific, the philosophical, and the poetic, and Anne employs a layered visual narrative that conceptually mirrors these collective relations. The title "Nowhere" reflects the power of solitude the artist found in the natural world, while in Iceland making the weavings, and the overwhelming shared cultural experience of uncertainty, isolation, loneliness, anxiety and helplessness, felt within the recent Covid epidemic, and the subject of this books: lichen. While lichens are not widely recognized, they are almost ubiquitous in naturural environments - everywhere and nowhere.

The collaborations and ideas in the book unfold in its materials and construction; for example all the threads are dyed with plant or insect extracts and are then woven into the fabric. Anne cut up hand-woven Jacquard fabric for the base fabric of imagery in the book, and the fabric was then layered with appliquéd wool felt collage illustrations. She added hand-embroidered cosmological symbols to convey further information about the period of time in which the book was made. Each image thus consists of collaged layers: digital weave structures; photographs of fungus; hand-drawn text; wool felt pieces; and patterns of migrating Arctic Terns. It incorporates digital Jacquard weaving, hand-embroidery, appliqué, natural dyes, wool, silk & cotton fibers. The black linen accordion binding was fabricated by Portland Garment Factory.

This stunning work was included in an exciting exhibition in Iceland, "Threads | Þræðir Intertwined" held in 2023. About the exhibition: "Textile Books and textiles are the two forms of artistic expression that have the longest history and tradition in Iceland, but it is rare that books and textiles are intertwined. This exhibition showcases artists’ books and textile pieces by Icelandic artists and visiting artists who have been inspired by the country’s landscapes, people, language and textile traditions. The works in this exhibition are connected through stitching, weaving, knotting, tying, binding, pattern and storyline. The artists have found parallel lives in each other, unintentionally approaching art and life in similar fashions across oceans and between generations."

Portland, OR: Anne Greenwood. Number 29 of 50 copies, signed by the artist and author. This limited edition is a facsimile of a unique artists' book that was made from cotton Crinoline with naturally hand-dyed appliqued images, embroidery, machine-sewn text, and letterpress printed patterns.

According to the artist: "'Shapes of Land' was conceived of in 2018 while retracing my footsteps from where I was born in North Dakota, to travels with my husband to his home in Argentina, our time in-between in Central America and Mexico, to where we live in Oregon, as I embarked on a journey to the land of my Northern ancestry; all the time thinking about the land and how it connects us. The book contains a series of landforms: lake, plains, isthmus, plateau, meander, arch, hill and these images reside alongside the bilingual prose by Mauricio Rioseco Milano and together, we offer these imaginative portals for traveling in space and time."

An accordion book with black cloth covers titled in white on the front. It is printed on both sides as the original fabric book was translucent. Filled with winding text about the land and sparse landscapes created with embroided text and appliqued imagery. They beautifully capture the almost intangible nature of vestiges - things disappearing or no longer in existence, printed by Diane Jacobs of the Scranton Press in Portland. This is a witty and engaging book from this accomplished book artist that she states "has all of your woes in one place." Ellen writes on her website: "Neither a literary work nor a graphic novel, it is a sequential visual experience, creating an empathetic and heartfelt journey through these small difficulties we all encounter." The Book of Small Regrets was conceived in response to the forced isolation of COVID when even small missteps could seem catastrophic. As an antidote, Ellen decided to create this artist book to help vanquish these little black clouds that immediately overwhelm, then linger and fade, only to be replaced by another when one least expects it. Like getting over anything, admitting your regrets is the first step to recovery. Naturally, Ellen wanted others to be able to be rid of theirs too. So, she reached out through her social network to over 300 people, asking them to contribute their own small regrets (to be presented anonymously) as a way to “unburden themselves” as part of the generative process of making the work. Later she solicited impulse purchases made and comfort foods eaten during the pandemic. The responses served as prompts for Ellen’s watercolor paintings, photographs and text, embracing irony, humor and generosity. Neither a literary work nor a graphic novel, it is a sequential visual experience, creating an empathetic and heartfelt journey through these small difficulties we all encounter."

Ellen is an interdisciplinary artist based in the Pacific Northwest. Her practice includes large scale, site-specific public art, multimedia temporary installations, artist books, photography, photo-based works, and occasional sound and video projects. Her work is deeply embedded in research and experimentation. Diverse in form and subject matter, much of her studio-based work weaves the personal with the political, while her site-based works explore the psychological intersection of landscape and memory. Ellen complements her independent studio practice with interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists, landscape architects and other artists. Sollod is an artist/activist, grounded in a commitment to civic, environmental and social responsibility.

Her works typically address feelings, memory, and experience. She studied book arts at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington DC where she made this book. Awakening is a powerful photobook done in response to the loss of friends that "left me wondering about the meaning of our existence and why some leave too prematurely." The photographs and text address these questions and the strange feelings that arose in her at night that left her waking up "knowing that one day I will die." Artist's Statement: "In my daily walk I found drains, manholes, signs, and other elements of urban furniture that work perfectly as engraving matrices. They are witnesses of the years and keep the iconography of each city; so I started taking impressions, this led me to think: Where does the water we use, or the rainwater go? This is invisible to our eyes, but it is there, in the bowels of the earth, and we are responsible for it. How much of that water could and should we reuse? With this work dedicated to Tlaloc (Mexica god of rain), I want to share these questions, as well as the beauty of the objects found."

This artists' book includes a collection of three large fold-out images silkscreen printed from manhole covers in the Mexico City and Miami, Florida. The original images were taken during walks by the artist via frottage - or rubbings. The prints are housed in a grey cloth covered portfolio with a silkscreened Aztec glyph of the Mexican rain god, Tlaloc and embossed title to front panel. The signed colophon with an explanation of this project is printed in Spanish inside the front cover. A pocket containing the folded prints is pasted down to the rear panel. This is a fascinating and particularly inventive book from these two talented and committed book artists. They state: "We have been collaborating for over twenty years, making artists’ books, zines, collages, prints, and drawings. Besotted still, it appears, with paper for its adaptable, foldable, cut-able, concealable, revealing nature, using an armoury of play, the poetic and familiar too, with the intention of luring you into our A(rtists’ books) to Z(ines).
Gracia & Louise: "’Because I Like You’ is based on the concept of a love letter to ten mammals. Each of the edition is housed in a black fabric Solander box with inlaid windows featuring one of the ten mammals enclosed. Each page has one mammal lemonwood block print portrait and one mirrored original collage of the portrayed mammal. The mammals featured range from a Greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) to a Sea otter (Enhydra lutris) by way of a Royal antelope (Neotragus pygmaeus) and a gruff Polar bear (Ursus maritimus).

"This artists’ book has been over a year in the making, based on a back and forth notion we have been toying with more and more (a collage in response to a print this time). The printed portrait shows nature, as intended (close to), and the collage shows the animal in different (and often less than ideal) surrounds. It is also our first book to feature woodblock prints."
