Very good brown & white DJ with an open tear to foot of spine which corresponds to bump in spine and minor wear to corners. This is one of three books published by Librairie Tross in 1863, 1865, and 1867 on Cartier's voyages. Explorer Jacques Cartier made three voyages to Canada, the first in 1534. This volume in French recounts his voyages, makes corrections and additions to the original book, and provides other notes about their encounters. Bound in three quarter leather with marbled brown paper boards. Leather is scuffed along spine with wear to hinges and corners rubbed. Crack / bump to front board near edge with chipping to paper. Top edge gilt and ribbon bookmark bound in. Bookplate of Charles Edward Hyman to front pastedowns of both volumes. Illustrated with numerous photogravures (from photographs), all with captioned tissue guards. Small spot of soiling to margin of one plate, not affecting the image. The tissue guard for this plate has a mark from the same spot and a short closed tear. Very clean and bright aside from this marking. An attractive set.
