London: Chapman and Hall, 1852. Hardcover. Ex-library from W. Wilson Moffat's English, French, and Italian Circulating Library, Edinburgh. According to his bookplate, Mr. Moffat was a bookseller, printer, and binder. His bookplate in the front of both volumes and the number 77 in ink on the front pastedown are the only evidence that this was part of a circulating library. Very good in original maroon cloth boards with gilt titles to spines and embossed decoration to spines and boards. Minor wear to edges of boards. Both bindings are slightly rolled. Clean interiors with only a few light smudge marks and notes in pencil on the rear free endpage of volume one. 310 pages in volume 1; 319 pages in volume 2. London: Henry G. Bohn, 1847. Hardcover. Complete and Correct Edition. Unlike previous editions of Curran's speeches, this one includes six of his bar speeches and 33 of his parlimentary speeches. Preceding each speech are facts and events of the case with occasional biographies of Curran's clients. John Philpot Curran (1750 - 1817) was an Irish orator, politician, lawyer, and judge known for his eloquent speeches. Bound in three quarter brown leather over marbled paper covered boards with dark brown and gilt title label to spine. Chipping to leather at foot of spine, bump to edge of rear board, wear to edges, and rubbing to boards. Rear hinge is starting to crack with a three inch split in the leather. Minor foxing throughout, heaviest on early and late pages. Ownership name in pen to front endpaper and a few small smudge marks / spots of soiling to margins of some pages. Baltimore: Fielding Lucas, Jr., 1838. Hardcover. Scarce original edition of the first compilation of Maryland's testamentary laws. Clement Dorsey (1778-1848) was a congressman and later a judge for the 5th Circuit Court of Maryland. The publisher, Fielding Lucas (1781-1854), was a prominent 19th century cartographer and publisher. Bound in brown leather. Joints and hinges are weak, spine is missing and leather is scraped and stained. Introductory pages are loose, but the rest of the text is intact. Bookplate of Leonadis Coyle on front pastedown.
