1939. Hardcover. Black oblong leatherette covers titled "photographs" in gilt and stab bound with black string. Includes black and white photographs from a vacation in 1939 of natural bridges, Smoky Mountain views from TN, pelicans and alligators in St. Petersburg, FL, aquatic gardens (Rainbow Springs, FL) pictures taken through the bottom of a glass bottom boat, Tarpon Spring, FL, the campus of the University of Tampa, St. Augustine, FL, Dayton Beach, and "Cotton Pickers". The next images are dated 1946, then back to 1941 - Niagra Falls and Eaglesmere, PA. Several pages of family photos are included included a few dated 1948 and captioned "the last time Aunt Carrie visited us." The next few pages dated September 1948 showcase Sherwood or "Sherry" - a little white and grey tuxedo kitten. Family photos from Ocean City, MD dated August 1957 follow. Then a few pages showing the growth of "Betty Ann Rice" from 1940 - 1949. Then more vacation pictures - Chateau Frontenac dated 1939, Ausable Chasm, NY, Quebec and views of the St. Lawrence River, then yellowed images of Yellowstone National Park dated 1953, followed by some stunning images of the Badlands. Next is Mark Twain's home in Hannibal, MO - then the Grand Teton Mountains followed by Lincoln's home in Springfield, IL, Salt Lake City and Utah's Copper Mine. Then more family dated 1953 "Mom's 72nd birthday." The rest of the album is blank. Includes over 150 photographs with a few photographic postcards mounted as well. Her artists' books have been collected by many museums and libraries. This scarce work is a meditation on birth and death after the loss of a baby. The contemplative text is accompanied by monochromatic photographs of sky, clouds, water, along with that of a woman giving birth and a solitary unmoving figure. The book can be opened as a codex or fanned out in carousel fashion to see all of the pages at once. Transparent covers reveal the photographic paper boards with title. 1978. Doris Lessing (1919 - 2013) was an English poet, playwright, and novelist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007.
