Minor rubbing to spine ends of both volumes and Light bumping to corners. Both volumes have a small bump to the bottom edge of the front board and a small and light scratch to the bottom edge of the text block. Very very slight, barely noticeable yellowing to the edges of the pages. Else is clean and bright with many illustrations throughout. Dark blue illustrated dust jackets with white titles to front and spine panels. One small closed tear to bottom edge of front dust jacket panel on volume I corresponding with the bump on the board. Rome: Tipografia Delle Belle Arti, 1837, 1848. Hardcover. Mixed state. Two volumes are from the first edition of 1837, with the third volume stating it is the second edition dated 1848. The new edition is numbered Volume I on the spine, while the two volumes from the first edition are numbered Volume II and Volume III on the spines. Antonio Nibby (1792 – 1839) was an Italian archaeologist and topographer. He was an expert on the topography of Rome and its environs. He was a professor of archaeology in the University of Rome and in the French Academy in Rome. For a few years Nibby worked together with the British archaeologist William Gell and together they published a study on the walls of Rome in 1820. They had plans of publishing a study on the topography of the Roman Campagna, but they ended up publishing separately [Wikipedia]. Bound in half vellum with paper marbled boards. Red and brown leather spine labels with title and volume number. Vellum is stained, rubbed, and bumped with fraying and small tears to spine edges. The paper boards are scraped, abraded, and worn along the edges. Volumes II and III have light damp stains to page edges generally not affecting the text. All of the volumes have scattered browning and foxing. The called for map by Gell is not present. Still a nice readable set in good plus condition. Small quartos.
