Madrid: Industrial Grafica, 1930. Hardcover. A handsome copy of De Winthuysen's classic work on Spanish gardens. De Winthuysen (1874-1956) was a well known Spanish artist and garden designer. He worked on the recovery and redesign in neo-Classical style of various gardens in Spain, many photographed in black and white and described in this volume. Bound in full brown leather with original paper covers and spine bound in. Accession number stamped on original paper front paper cover. Leather is very good with slight bumping, some rubbing along spine, and small chip to rear upper corner. Scratch on first cover. Red leather spine label with title and author. Inner dentelles and marbled red, green, and gold endpapers. Interior pages are also in very good condition. Owner bookplate affixed to rear free endpaper. These three volumes in French on the voyages made by Christopher Columbus to the new world were published as part of Navarrete's five volume collection of the voyages and discoveries made by the Spaniards since the late 15th century. The volumes include two engravings of Columbus, a facsimile of one of his handwritten letters, and two large fold-out maps of the areas he explored. This is a monumental history of the four voyages of Columbus that includes a lengthy introduction, detailed descriptions of each voyage, the texts of his letters, and more. Bound in three quarter brown leather with marbled paper boards and endpapers. Leather is scuffed, bumped, and the spine is sunned. Volume II has an area of exposed board to front cover. Evidence of spine and front cover labels having been removed and round blind stamp to title pages. There is scattered foxing throughout, most heavily in volume II. The title labels are no longer present and one of the black leather author labels is also missing. There is a large chip to the author label of volume 1. All volumes are decorated with raised bands and gilt decorations to the spines. The spine leather is cracked and there is a chip to the foot of the spine of volume 2. Minor wear to the edges and corners of boards. Marbled endpages and full marbled edges. Good plus full leather w/gilt bordered bands to spine; brown & gilt title label to spine is only present on vol. 2, and lacks right half. Boards are quite scuffed and worn, especially along the edges, hinges, and head/foot of spine. Spotty foxing throughout volumes, heavy on endpapers and engraved frontis./plates, all of which have their original protective tissue paper. Madrid: 1661. Hardcover. Uncommon early Spanish law book originally printed in 1631. The book is a review and practice for scribes, early officials of the courts, written by the Camara scriviner of "His Majesty." Bound in later marbled boards with leather spine. Gilt partial title and decorations to spine separated by gilt lines. Front and back boards somewhat bowed. Front hinge has pulled away from the text block but the rear board and the interior pages are tight. Inner pages show browning and spotting, some pages more than others, not affecting the legibility of the text or the shoulder notes. Top page edges have been trimmed to fit binding. Some have been cut very close to the text, but it does not appear that any of the text is missing except for loss of chapter headers and the first word of the title page. .Two pages near rear have been torn in the margin along the fore edges, one of which intrudes very slightly into the text. There are also tears to the top fore edge margins of the indices at the end, again not affecting the readibility. Bookplate of noted Baltimore book collector Alfred J. O'Ferrall on front free end paper with ink ownership signature on facing page. Unpaginated. LAW/012910. Good. More

Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1853. Hardcover. First Edition. Wallis was also the author of Glimpses of Spain, or Notes of an Unfinished Tour in 1847, which was published in 1849. At that time, he was asked by the U.S. government to return to Spain on official business, where he was able to observe its institutions and meet public officials. This work resulted from that visit. 12mo. Three quarter brown leather with blue and brown marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt title, blind-stamped devices, and raised bands to spine. Marbled endpapers and full marbled edges. Leather on corners of front and back covers is worn, and there are other minor scuff marks on spine. Dampstaining to margins of front and back free endpapers and first few and last few pages of book, with slight browning throughout. Otherwise, clean, with small stains on a few pages.
