Raleigh, NC: T. Loring, 1843. Hardcover. Scarce. These indexes were prepared in response to an 1827 request made by the governor of North Carolina to Arthur Gallatin, the American minister in London, for his assistance in procuring documents held by the English government pertaining to the early history of North Carolina. The detailed indexes are for documents issued from 1663 to 1777. Bound in three quarter brown leather with marbled paper boards and red leather title label. Leather and boards are chipped, scuffed, and stained. Front hinge is cracked but text block is still attached. Some pages are creased by what appears to be pressure from another book. Scattered foxing throughout not affecting legibility. Ownership label of English banker and politician Richard Biddulph Martin on half title page. A decent copy of this uncommon publication. Includes advertisements for Bermuda vacations, Breyer's ice cream, Hohner Harmonicas, Wilbur Buds chocolates (which look suspiciciosly like Hershey Kisses), Fralinger's Salt Water Taffy, Ocean City, N.J. and more. He discusses rattlesnakes, deserts, scorpions, robbery, Apache encounters, starvation, the dangers of his travels, and much more. Bound in later blue buckram with gilt title to spine, which reads "The Apache Country." Small dampstain to bottom corners in margins only of most pages. Philadelphia: William S. Martien, 1850. Hardcover. Scarce first edition of this Presbyterian history of Virginia. William Henry Foote (1794 – 1869) was an American Presbyterian minister in Virginia and North Carolina. He served as a Confederate chaplain during the American Civil War. He wrote several books about the history of Presbyterians in the American South. Foote received a Doctorate of Divinity (D.D.) from Hampden–Sydney College (H–SC) in 1847. He served on its Board of Trustees from 1851 to 1870, and Board President from 1864 to 1866. While he was at H–SC, he wrote a two-volume history of Presbyterians in Virginia; Sketches of Virginia, Historical and Biographical (1850) and Sketches of Virginia, Historical and Biographical, Second Series (1855). Bound in tan three quarter leather with marbled boards, page edges, and endpapers. Leather is faded, rubbed, and bumped, and paper boards are scuffed. Light scattered foxing and but text remains quite legible. Ownership signature on ffep and apparent acquisition number on next ffep. Very good copy. Measures 5.75 x 9.25 inches. 568 pages.
