Easthampton, MA: Abecedary Press, 1990. Hardcover. Number 8 of 10 deluxe copies signed by the artist. This Abecedary Press Production's book was written by Mark P. Carol, as a contemplation inspired by a trip to the Galapagos Islands to view Haley’s Comet. It is a humorous look at contemporary social and sexual values through the guise of rocks (occasionally referred to as the “pet rock turns 30-something.”) Alan James Robinson illustrated the book with two handsome wood engravings and seven line drawings depicting the Galapagos Islands, the Galapagos Tortoise and of course, the Banging Rocks. Alan is a renowned book artist who has been producing fine limited edition books since the 1980s. His work can be found in many institutions nationally and abroad. This engaging deluxe production's book is bound in quarter leather green Moroccan goat with a millimeter leather fore-edge and Japanese Chiri (bark) paper. The book and its set of two actual banging rocks of green Beryl crystals from Connemara, Ireland are “housed” in an elaborate hand crafted cherry dove-tailed jointed wooden box with expansion joints. This geo-stable enclosure was crafted by Allan Wheeler and protects the Banging Rocks, which are of a semi-precious nature. Printed in Centaur & Arrighi types set by Dan Carr at Golgonooza Type Foundry on T.H. Saunders Hotpress Watercolor paper. Printed by master printer H.P. McGrath. Harpers Woods, MI: The Adagio Press, 1969. Hardcover. INTERESTING ASSOCIATION COPY WITH RELATED MATERIAL LAID IN. This beautiful copy is inscribed by author John Dreyfus to noted Chicago book collector and philanthropist Samuel R. Rosenthal, "for Sam R Rosenthal after a splendid evening John Dreyfus 16 December 1978 Chicago." Rosenthal and his wife, Marie-Louise, had a pre-eminent book collection that concentrated on livres d'artistes, illustrated books, and private press. This is 39 of 75 folio copies issued with one vellum leaf and one handmade paper leaf laid in from books printed at the Doves Press. There were 329 copies originally printed of this Adagio Press edition (although fewer than 180 were offered for sale), each with two Doves Press leaves: 12 with both Doves Press leaves printed on vellum; 75 with one leaf on vellum and the second on handmade paper; and 242 with both leaves printed on handmade paper. This copy has an octavo vellum leaf from Goethe's "Faust," issued in 1906, and a folio double leaf on paper with Leviticus 16-22 from the famed Dove's Bible. The Adagio Press was founded in the late 1950s by Leonard Bahr, who signed the colophon. In Roderick Cave's The Private Press, second edition, he cites the Bible as the most substantial title printed by the press. In 1970, Strouse had sent two letters to Rosenthal, included with this copy, offering C-S The Master Craftsman. Strouse said that he would make Rosenthal's copy "a little special" by putting in a double leaf from the Bible. Two letters dated 1978 are laid in from Dreyfus to Rosenthal and his wife. These letters and the 1978 inscription indicate that he got to know Rosenthal around this time. In one letter, Dreyfus expresses his appreciation for their expressions of sympathy over the tragic death of his son. There are a few handwritten additions to the text of Dreyfus's essay in this copy, which may have added when he inscribed the book, but this is conjecture. The book is hand sewn and bound in quarter vellum with Cockerell marbled paper covered boards and gilt title to spine. It is printed in red and black Palatino Roman and Pascal types on handmade Tovil paper. In addition to the Doves Press leaves, laid in are the prospectus, a mounted photograph of Cobden-Sanderson with Emery Walker developed from the original negative, a smaller copy of the photo, and a pamphlet issued in 1971 titled "A Letter from Stella." This pamphlet reprints the text of the last letter written by Cobden-Sanderson to his daughter, Stella, a few hours before he died, with an introduction by Strouse. [54 pages.] PRI/042309. Fine.

Bound in full dark brown leather boards with red and gilt title labesls to spines. Gilt volume numbers to volumes 1, 2, and 3. Volume 4 has been expertly restored; the boards are original, and spine is modern with original title label. The front boards of Volumes 3 and 4 are detached but present. Cracking to exterior hinges of volumes several volumes. Leather of spines of volumes 1 - 3 are cracked with minor chipping. Leather boards of all volumes are scuffed and edgeworn with bumped corners. A border is tooled on all boards. Gilt tooling to edges of boards is worn. Bookplate of previous owner to front pastedowns of all volumes, Harold Randolph. Vols. are also signed by previous owner. Laid paper interiors are very clean with bright text and only very occasional spots of foxing. Edges of pages in Volume 4 are somewhat warped. Decorative woodcut headpieces begin all chapters. Minneapolis: Angel Bomb Press, 2020. Limited to 125 copies signed and numbered by the book artist, Todd Thyberg. He writes in the colophon that the book took over two years to write, create, and print. He states: "This experiential read was conceived as an ode to H.P. Lovecraft, whose books I had discovered and read profusely as a teenager growing up in a small town in rural North Dakota....I knew I wanted to be a writer, to breathe life into stories that transported the reader to realms unknown. H.P. Lovecraft gifted the world with a style of cosmic horror and weird fiction that was previously unknown. In homage, Todd created a mythical and mystical expedition to the steppes of Siberia to find the temple and artifacts of a mysterious people that supposedly once inhabited this barren and forbidding land. He says, "In the winter of ‘18, I rented a cabin in the woods of Wisconsin and sequestered myself for a week, sketching, researching and writing down plot points. I took an historic event that fascinates me and turned it on its head, spinning it into the world of old gods and monsters that thrilled me as a kid. I wanted to celebrate and honor the creepy cosmic horror that made Lovecraft’s work so unique. One of the men on the expedition is required to document their findings. Odd diagrams and even odder structures are found and recorded for the archives at Miskatonic University. What is it that they find? What happens to the expedition when they find it?" It’s all hidden within. But be forewarned! Many who have seen the contents of The Miskatonic Papers have died horrible deaths or gone completely insane! If you hear a wet, rustling noise behind you, you had best run screaming. After exploring Todd's remarkable and complex production, the reader will indeed understand Todd's warning! The work comes in a foil-stamped grey clothbound clamshell box with three sealed folders inside.Todd urges the reader to break the seals and pore through the contents of the folders. One includes a broadside for the expedition, drawings, two letters, a rubbing, telegrams from the field, and an amazing handwritten expedition journal. All of them letterpress printed, aged, and weathered. The Expedition Broadside appears stained with ale and smudges from the hands of inquisitive sailors. It states that Professor Tyler Freeborn seeks able-bodied men to risk life and limb for the advancement of science. Do you have a thirst for adventure? Perhaps you should apply. Each piece of the book was made to look as if it was created 100 years ago. Stains, creases, and even burned edges will provide the reader with a rich experience when delving through the ephemera and piecing the story together. Printed on a selection of stocks as well as vintage business cards and journal pages, with too many typefaces to name and lots of handwriting as well. Letterpress printed at the Angel Bomb studio. Francois Arago (1786-1853) was an important French astronomer, physicist, and mathematician, who was also a politician for republican causes. For some years before his death, Arago spent much time revising his large collection of manuscripts with a view toward their definitive publication. This work mainly consists of the course of Lectures on Astronomy which he delivered annually at the Observatory of Paris over eighteen years. Each of the volumes is organized into sections that the author calls books with several chapters on the subject of that book, resulting in a comprehensive discourse on astronomy and related fields. The text is accompanied by numerous plates and hundreds of wood engravings. Bound in original green cloth bindings. Volume I has been rebacked. Gilt author, title, and volume number to spine. Mission, B.C. Barbarian Press, 2017. Number 89 of 100 copies for sale. Signed by the book artists. This delightful book celebrates the wonderful Barbarian Press's 40th anniversary and is the 47th book to be issued by the press. The Crispins thought that the occasion seemed to require some formal observance. Crispin writes: "Some of the more frequent questions asked us concern bears: Why do we have a bear as a press device? Do we really have bears around the press room? Is the bear a symbol of something? Is the bear really Crispin? – and so on. One of the most requested ephemeral pieces we ever produced was A Sloth of Bears, a broadsheet we printed in 2002 which showed all the press devices we had by that time commissioned from engravers who had illustrated our books. Since we have had several new devices engraved since 2002, and since the ‘FAQ’s (as they are now inevitably called) listed above are not answered by a broadsheet, we decided to print a small book about them. The book opens with a Preface about bears, our relationship with them, and theirs with the press. The body of the book prints all nineteen devices to date in chronological order, each image accompanied by a list of the titles in which the device has been used, and a note about the engraver and our work together. As well as versions of our press device, we have sometimes had pairs of printer’s marks engraved for us. These marks, in effect graphic ‘signatures’ of an individual printer or designer, have at various times been a feature of book design and production. The most famous modern example is probably Bruce Roger’s thistle. In our case, we initiated the marks with A Christmas Carol, or, The Miser’s Warning in 1984. Jan’s features a robin singing atop a tombstone bearing her initials; Crispin’s is a hand holding a hornbook which bears his initials and the word ‘Felicitas’. The reasons behind these are explained in an afterword, which also prints all six of the earlier printer’s marks, two each by Edwina Ellis, Colin Paynton, and Nancy Ruth Jackson. In celebration of our 40th anniversary, we have commissioned a fourth pair from Andy English, who has also created a twentieth press device, and his device and printer’s marks will be displayed on the book’s colophon page. The book thus includes a total of twenty devices and eight printer’s marks, all but one of the images printed from the wood, by fourteen artists and engravers: Louis Turpin, Edwina Ellis, Colin See-Paynton, John DePol, Barry Moser, Wesley Bates, Ted Staunton, Simon Brett, Gerard Brender à Brandis, Abigail Rorer, Peter Lazarov, Andy English, Nancy Ruth Jackson, and John Lawrence." Ursus typographicus is designed in a small landscape format, bound in decorated boards, with a delightful frontispiece by Andy English featuring three cartouches showing the exterior of the press building and two interiors with two bears hard at work. The text is set in Van Dijck roman and italic with Castellar drop caps, printed in black and blue on Zerkall Book White mouldmade paper. The engravings are all printed from the wood, except for our first device by Louis Turpin, which is printed from a photo-engraved magnesium block taken from his original drawing. The book is quarter bound in grey morocco with paper over boards printed with a pattern adapted from a binding brass engraved by Alex McGuckin as a gift to the press, and is contained in a blue silk-covered slipcase.
