The Heathen Chinee: Plain Language from Truthful James
San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1934. Hardcover. A very good plus copy of the trade edition of this work, originally published in a limited edition of 500 copies. Harte's satirical poem is illustrated in exuberant fashion by Phil Little. In an introduction, Ina Coolbrith details the context and effects of Harte's satire in which he sought but failed to combat perceptions that he was racially prejudiced. This folio volume was designed by John Henry Nash in Asian fashion with string binding over blue paper boards, and a paper title label of mock Chinese calligraphy. Housed in orange slipcase with slight soiling and wear to spine and edges. Unpaginated. Very Good. More
