Read at a meeting of the Sette held at Limmer's Hotel on Friday, January 14th, 1898 and presented to the Sette by John Todhunter, playwright. The Sette of Odd Volumes was a British bibliophile club. In original pale blue wraps, which are somewhat soiled and wrinkled. Interior pages are clean, with some unopened. Includes a list of members. With book label of Henry William Poor, which has offset on the facing page. Poor (1844-1915) was an American banker, stockholder, and well-known book collector. Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County, Inc., 1983. Hardcover. Reprinted in 1983 from the 1906 edition, which was published by the Lewis Publishing Company. All three volumes are bound in matching black leatherette boards with gilt titles to spines. A mouse has nibbled the corners, board edges, and tips of page corners of Volume I. All volumes have photographic illustrations. Slight musty odor to all volumes. Clean interiors overall; however, there are pencil notations and underlining to several pages. There are also a few underlinings in red pen. An excellent reference set despite the noted condition issues. Volume I is 554 pages plus modern index; Volume II is 695 pages plus modern index; Volume III is 553 pages plus modern index. STA/060922. Very Good.
London: James Ridgway, 1826. Hardcover. Third Edition. Includes 4 pages of seeds and 55 full page plates of plants. Appears to be lacking 1 plate. Illustrator George Sinclair worked as a gardener for John, 6th Duke of Bedford in his country home of Woburn Abbery from 1803 to 1820. During this period he conducted experiments using different fertilizers to see their effects on different types of grasses and whether they had a nutritional impact on animals. Rebacked with modern tan buckram and the original red leather title label laid down. Original full tan calf boards with modern endpapers. Scuff marks to spine and wear to label. Wear to boards and edges. Includes numerous hand colored illustrations. Offsetting from illustrations and occasional spots of foxing, but clean and bright overall. 438 pages. NAT/080522. Very Good.
