Paris. A leaf from a medieval manuscript Bible: Paris, France, mid 13th century. In Latin on vellum (197 x 134 mm). There are fifty-five lines of triple column text in microscopic-miniscule Gothic script. This leaf is from the final section of the Bible and defines the Hebrew names in alphabetical order. This leaf ends with names beginning with D and starts with C. The letter “D” is four lines high in highly embossed gold on a ground of pink and blue with white tendrils. Verso: there are fifty-five lines of triple column text in microscopic-miniscule Gothic script. Bible leaves have become rare especially ones in fine condition. Framed. #3142. Fine.

India: 1740. This is a leaf from a very imposing prayer book clearly scripted for an important personage, India, circa 1740, on paper. There are seven lines naskh script in black ink and an interlinear commentary in red nasta'liq is between verses. The style is typically Indian with a profusion of gold leafing and including 'clouds' and gold lines in-between script. The particular distinction of this work is the delicate meandering vine in gold round each page, a treatment reserved for the finest manuscripts. Measures 235 x 143 mm. Archivally matted with both sides of leaf visible. #2630. Fine.

Leaves from a Small Koran

This is an exquisite pair of leaves from a fine small Koran (123x142 mm.) that was in the Qajar period (mid 19th century), scribed in black elegant naskhi.  Many authorities consider the Gulf States to have produced work second to none, especially the illuminated introductory and end pages of the holy books.  Sura headings are in red on a gold or blue and gold grounds and verse endings are marked with gold medallions; gold floral decorations encircle each page. Some additional notations mark the 5th and 10th verses.  The leaves from this fragment have been in great demand. Archivally matted with both sides of leaf visible. #5204/5205. Fine.
