Newark, Delaware: University of Delaware Library, 2000. Softcover. Paul Bowles (1910-1999) was an American expatriate composer, author, and translator. [Wikipedia] He is most frequently associated with the city of Tangier, where he settled in 1947 after having first visited in 1931. His first novel, The Sheltering Sky, was set in French North Africa. Bowles was a prolific composer, writer (especially short stories), and translator. He studied music with Aaron Copland and was a compatriot of writers such as Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal. This catalog is of an exhibition of the Special Collections of the Hugh M. Morris Library at the University of Delaware. It includes chapters on poetry, music, novels, short stories, translations, travel writing, and life writing. Includes numerous color plates of items in the exhibition. Small quarto. 1939. Hardcover. Black oblong leatherette covers titled "photographs" in gilt and stab bound with black string. Includes black and white photographs from a vacation in 1939 of natural bridges, Smoky Mountain views from TN, pelicans and alligators in St. Petersburg, FL, aquatic gardens (Rainbow Springs, FL) pictures taken through the bottom of a glass bottom boat, Tarpon Spring, FL, the campus of the University of Tampa, St. Augustine, FL, Dayton Beach, and "Cotton Pickers". The next images are dated 1946, then back to 1941 - Niagra Falls and Eaglesmere, PA. Several pages of family photos are included included a few dated 1948 and captioned "the last time Aunt Carrie visited us." The next few pages dated September 1948 showcase Sherwood or "Sherry" - a little white and grey tuxedo kitten. Family photos from Ocean City, MD dated August 1957 follow. Then a few pages showing the growth of "Betty Ann Rice" from 1940 - 1949. Then more vacation pictures - Chateau Frontenac dated 1939, Ausable Chasm, NY, Quebec and views of the St. Lawrence River, then yellowed images of Yellowstone National Park dated 1953, followed by some stunning images of the Badlands. Next is Mark Twain's home in Hannibal, MO - then the Grand Teton Mountains followed by Lincoln's home in Springfield, IL, Salt Lake City and Utah's Copper Mine. Then more family dated 1953 "Mom's 72nd birthday." The rest of the album is blank. Includes over 150 photographs with a few photographic postcards mounted as well. This hardcover volume includes a letter to the recipient offering the catalog, with instructions for those planning to attend. Also inserted is a folded sheet with the prices realized for the posters offered. There were total sales of $1,513,160. Bound in purple cloth with title in gilt and illustration of a poster affixed to the front cover. Some signs of light wear and fading to spine. Interior is bright and clean with color and b&w images of every poster along with a description and auction estimate. New York: School of Library Service Columbia University, 1983. Softcover. Scarce. An interesting picture of the issues and artists involved in this event of over 40 years ago on the state of fine printing in the United States. It was organized by Terry Belanger, who later founded the esteemed Rare Book School now located at the University of Virginia. The conference sessions were organized around the components of fine printing: paper, bookbinding, ink and type. Participants included such notable figures as Timothy Barrett Carol Blinn, Ruth Fine, Walter Hamady, Jerry Kelly, Hedi Kyle, Kim Merker, Michael Peich, Leonard Seastone, Claire Van Vliet, and Kathy Walkup. Softcover in blue covers with titling in black to cover and spine. In addition to transcripts of the sessions, there are lists of the names and addresses of the participants the intitial list of who was invitied. and the exhibitors at the public book fair. Inserted are a prospectus and a letter sent by Belanger to Jake Chernofsky, editor of the AB Bookman's Weekly. This was apparently his copy. Near fine condition. 8.5 x 11 inches. 121 pages. Within the article, there is long ballad about a favorite hound of Llewellyn, Prince of Wales, son-in-law of King John. It concludes by asking readers to send their "very nice terrier - English, Scotch, or Skye - to Putnam, for his very sincere friend and humble servant." Also includes a review of Elizabeth Browning's poem "Aurora Leigh"; a biography about a deceased Virginia slave submitted by his owner; chapters from John William de Forest's novel "Witching Times"; a collection of letters about college life in the 1750s including notes on the costs of living, clothing, and school supplies; a humorous illustrated article about the tails of animals and tails on clothing; book reviews, editorials, news stories, and more. n.p. ca. 1925-1928. Interesting samples of Czech printing fom the early 20th century. One is a large bifold done by Vojtech Preissig dated 1925. Preissig (1873-1944) was a Czech typographer, printmaker, designer, illustrator, painter and teacher. Printed on light tan paper about 9 x 11 inches. It includes a line engraving. The other two samples are from Cesky Bibliofil, an important Czech annual devoted to book design, typography, and the graphic arts. Each is bifold measuring 6.75 x 9.25 inches. One of the samples has a tear and abrasion over line four of the text while the other is in fine condition. EPHEM/052523. Very Good. More

Paris: [multiple], [1797 - 1801]. Hardcover. An interesting compilation of five dramatic or comedic plays published in the last years of the French Revolution and the establishment of the First Republic. Three of the works were published by Chez Barba, a bookshop that specialized in the theater. It was founded by Jean-Nicolas Barba, a bookseller and sometimes actor. All of the plays are complete. They were printed on various types of paper, and some have browned considerably while others are clean and bright. They were apparently printed quickly and not that carefully, with upside or incorrect page numbers. Bound in tan cloth boards that are bumped, stained and rubbed. A torn paper title label is affixed to the spine. Free front endpaper has a piece cut out, removing a signature. The front pastedown has an ownership signature dated 1846. and a small piece of paper affixed along the top of the hinge. A good minus anthology of 18th century plays. Measures 5 x 7.75 inches.
