Neuman, B. Paul.
The Supplanter.
London:
Methuen and Co.,
1897.
Hard Cover.
Neuman, the son of Russian immigrants (presumabley Jewish as they spelled their anglicized surname Newman), left the law to become a Congregationalist. He ran a boys' settlement house and also wrote fiction and poetry. He was a contributor to the the Yellow Book, though apparently not part of the Wilde or Bodley Head circle, he is one of the many minior fin de siecle authors who merit more attention. This is a scarce, early novel by Neuman. Very good in original blue cloth boards with gilt title to spine. Attractive green and silver Art Nouveau design to cover and spine. Minor wear to edges of boards, light rubbing to joints, and slight fading to spine illustration. The interior is clean overall with signs of gentle handling. Embossed stamp of previous owner to front free endpage. 347 pages plus 39 pages of ads. LIT/032408.
