San Diego: False Bay Editions, 2001. Stiff Boards. Copy C of 26 lettered copies. This gorgeous alphabet book captures the wonder and joy of the cosmos through words, pictures, and various imaginative and inventive visual constructions throughout the book. There are windows, foldouts, items that pull out, cutouts, a flexagon, and many others. In their colophon, the authors say: "This ABC book of the universe was created from March to November, 2011. Cetacea, The Great Whale

Cetacea, The Great Whale

Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, [1981]. Hard Cover. Number 23 of 100 copies, signed by the artist (Alan James Robinson), binders (David Bourbeau and Gray Parrot), and printer (Harold Patrick McGrath). The total issue was 110 copies including 10 artists' proofs. This copy includes an autographed letter signed from Robinson to Joel Bernstein written on card printed by Robinson with a whale wood engraving. Also included is an original water color of Bernstein's "favorite" whale species which Robinson has included to thank him for his patience while waiting for the edition to be completed. The prospectus is laid in. "Roaming the seas in the course of their yearly migration, these largest of creatures ever known to inhabit our water planet have been held in fear and affection, awe and fascination by humankind. As a result, whales are an integral part of our oral, written and artistic history. The oldest known detailed drawings of whales were found in caves in Norway and date back to at least 4000 BC. The publication of this portfolio thus expands upon a 6000 year old tradition depicting whales as the subject of human focus and expression" (Thomas B. Grooms). The artist Alan Robinson is also a master printer who established the Cheloniidae Press, later called The Press of the Sea Turtle, in 1979. The press has published 27 letterpress books. This book includes seven striking bleed etchings by Robinson which depict twelve major species of whales including the Bowhead, Beluga, Killer, Blue, Sperm, Minke, Finback, Humpback, Gray, Sei, Narwhal, and Right Whale. Each etching is accompanied by a page of text detailing biological information about the species and a two-color map showing migration routes and breeding areas. The title page and colophon feature wood engravings and there are blind stamped line-cuts of whales along the margins of the text on several pages. The etchings, each of which are signed by the artist were printed by him at the Cheloniidae Press. The text and wood engravings were printed by Harold Patrick McGrath at the Hampshire Typothetae. There are tissue guards for each print and blue patterned end pages. The illustrations and text are loose as issued and are housed in an oblong folder. The front panel and spine of the folder are covered in Niger oasis goat skin which has been sculpted with the head of a Right Whale in low relief by David Bourbeau of the Thistle Bindery. The rear panel is covered in black cloth. This beautiful and elaborate folder is housed in a black cloth box with morocco spine titled in gilt. The box is in very good condition with browning to the spine, a few scuff marks to the covers and light wear to the corners. The box was created by Gray Parrot. This project was produced in conjunction with a grant from the Environmental Marine Arts Fund which is part of the Center for Environmental Education and the Whale Protection Fund. The Age of Partial Objects

The Age of Partial Objects

2005. 18 of 25 copies. Dean Dass is a noted artist, printmaker, and book artist. There have been many exhibits of his work , which can be found in both public and private collections. He has taught at the University of Virginia since 1985. Until this book, all of his books over the past twenty years have been manuscripts and thus unique. The Age of Partial Objects is his first editioned book. He worked on it for 18 months in order to not compromise his ideas of what is a book. For him the tension between the unique and the reproducible is vital. According to his artist's statement, this book turns Melanie Klein's clinical term "partial objects" into a metaphor for an age consisting of fragments and fragmented knowledge. The result of his efforts is a stunning book that conveys mystery, the incomplete, and the melancoly of existence. On various papers, Dass used gouache, collage, pencil, inkjet, etching lithography, Xerox and Xerox transfer, and letterpress to create this book. Bound in grey and silver paper laminated on cotton with letter press text of title on cover. Quarto in fine condition. 150 pages. ArtistsBooks/110910. Fine.

The First Writing

The First Writing

San Jose, CA: Prose and Letters Press, 2004. Hard Cover. Number 24 of 50 copies. Signed and numbered by the artist. This printed book is based on a unique hand painted book by the artist. Bound accordion style in Lokta paper covered boards with hand painted gold accents and leather and bead closure. The inspiration for this book was the Lithuanian-American archaeologist, Marija Gimbutas (1921 - 1994), known for her research on the Neolithic and Bronze age cultures of Europe. Gimbutas theorized that the first writing predated Sumerian businessmen by a few thousand years, and instead grew out of symbolic marks on ritual objects made to venerate the Great Goddess in Old Europe. Artist, Cari Ferraro, was heavily influenced by this theory and created an alphabet style based on Marija's catalog of marks which she has used in this book. The background painting on all of the pages uses symbols found in the 5000-year passage grave Newgrange in Ireland, whose meaning has never been fully understood. The design is intended to feel like a cave wall with ancient symbols and writing. The text reads "The first writing/ not merely scribble/ devised by accountants to track livestock or record property/ the first writing/ made to track the moon/ inscribe spirit/ praise for the great mother." An attractive book. [10 pages] ARTB/042108. Fine.
