Leading the Cranes Home. A Selection of Chinese Poems translated by Arthur Waley

The Old Stile Press, 2006. Hardcover. Number 108 of 150 copies, numbered and signed by the artist. This is a selection of 24 poems translated by Arthur Waley and illustrated with Japanese style woodblock prints by Ralph Kiggell. The translations first appeared in Waley's books titled "170 Chinese Poems" (1918) and "Chinese Poems" (1946); the original poems date from c. 206 BC to c. 1125 AD. The poems that appear in this book were chosen as they "were both beautiful to read and also inspired (the artist) to produce images as woodblock prints ... animals, plants, landscapes, moods, and atmospheres" (Old Stile Press). The strange metres and odd rhythms found in Waley's translations influenced modern English poetry. Fine in orange paper covered flexible boards with brown title to spine and illustrations of chrysanthemums by the artist to both boards. Designed and printed by Nicolas McDowall at the Old Stile Press. Printed on Velin Arches in Elizabeth type. Housed in a tan cloth covered slipcase with a printed illustration pasted down to front panel. Unpaginated. [56 pages] PRI/081809. Fine.
