Peter Ibbetson. Two volumes.
London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co. 1892. Du Maurier, George. First Edition. Hardcover. First English Edition. George Du Maurier (1834-96) was a well known illustrator and novelist. He illustrated works by many of the most famous authors of his time, including Hardy, Thackeray, Gaskell and Collins; he also illustrated his own novels, including this story of the life of a man who spent his last 25 years incarcerated in an asylum for the criminally insane. The novel became a successful movie in 1935 starring Gary Cooper. Very good in original beige cloth with brown titles to spines and illustrations to front boards. Browning to spines and light soiling to cloth boards but otherwise very bright and clean. Includes numerous illustrations and front cover design by Du Maurier. Each volume is housed in a half-morocco slipcase with red cloth boards and gilt titles to spine. A very nice copy. Sadleir 1674a, Tinker 856, Wolff 1950. Volume I: 213 pages; Volume II: 235 pages.
