As described in the Oxford Companion to English Literature (p. 565) this was Le Sage's masterpiece and it had great influence in 18th century comic fiction. It was first translated into English by Tobias Smollett. In four small volumes 3 by 5.5 inches bound in full contemporary leather. The spine has four raised bands with gilt design in three and author and title in the other two.The edges of the boards have a very small gilt design of stripes.In very good condition with some minor bumps and rubbing. The hinges are a bit tender but the volumes are sturdily bound. The interior pages are very clean and bright save for light browning to the end pages. The ownership signature of a previous owner, James Oldham is inscribed on front free end pages. Nice bookplate with flower design and initials B.C.T. on front pastedowns.
