Brussels: G. Van Oest, 1912. Hardcover. Folio. Bellini (c.1400-c.1470) was a key figure in the development of Renaissance painting in northern Italy. He also founded something of a dynasty, with his sons and son-in-law, Andrea Mantegna, all becoming famous painters in their own right. Most of Bellini’s paintings have disappeared, and his two surviving sketchbooks, one at the Louvre and one at the British Museum, are how he is best remembered. These two oversized folio volumes lavishly reproduce the masterful drawings from each sketch book along with a facing description of each. Volume I has 134 plates and Volume II has 100. Many are on double pages and fold out. Very good in the original half vellum with brown paper boards and gilt title to spine and front boards. As with most heavy books, the joints show some splitting but have been repaired and are holding tight. The vellum has some soiling and spotting, and there is minor scuffing to the paper boards. The interior is bound tightly and is very clean. ART/8122. Very Good. More
New York: Abbeville Press, 1981. Hardcover. Abstract Expressionist sculptor and painter Herbert Ferber (1906 - 1991) is best remembered for his steel sculptures. "The lavishly illustrated text by art historian and critic E.C. Goossen, a long-time colleague and friend of Ferber's, outlines the major developments in the artist's sculpture and painting. His analysis of sevearl key works is illuminated by reproductions of Ferber's sketches and models for the pieces. In supplementary essay - by turns witty, cantankerous, and impassioned - Ferber himself recalls the exciting, innovative art world of the '40s and '50s, and provocatively contrasts it to the commercialized milieu of today" (dust jacket). Folio. Brown cloth covered boards with gilt title to front board and to spine. Slight fading to edges of boards. Interior is clean and bright with illustrations throughout, many of which are in full color. Blue illustrated dust jacket with black title to front panel and to white spine panel. Slight fading to edge of front panel. 228 pages. ART511231. Near Fine in Near Fine Dust Jacket. More
Abradale Press/Harry N Abrams, Inc, 1983. Hardcover. "This book is an hommage to Monet, providing a more complete perspective on his work than any previous study. In more than 125 color and nearly 240 duotone reproductions Monet's art is freshly examined; the familiar and treasured pictures are here, but there are scores of new images - including some 50 never before seen in color - gathered from private collections, dealer archives, and museums throughout Europe and the United States. They have been assembled by Robert Gordon, who has spent some ten years in teh quest. The purpose of this extraordinary collection is to fully explore the painting problems that Monet confronted throughout his life, problems which changed with each new motif, subject, or theme that he chose. They are the eternal problems of the painter - light, color, composition, structure - but the solutions were Monet's own" (jacket). Cleveland: The World Publishing Company, 1968. Hardcover. Second volume in this series on art in Russia. "The 17th century was still rooted in the artistic traditions of an earlier period, and the need to conform to the canons laid down by Patriarch Nikon left little scope for creative exuberance. This was the period that saw the emergence of such centres of artistic life as Rostov and Yaroslavl. The 18th century, in contrast, turned deliberately towards the West. Peter the Great created a splendid palace at Peterhof, a Russian counterpart to Louis XIV's Versailles ... In these years Russia enjoyed a splendid flowering of baroque architectures. Western influence is evident also in the field of painting ... This contact with the West, too, led to the process of secularization which is one of the most striking features of Russian art in this period. This brilliant and fascinating study by Abraam Kaganovich, of the Department of Russian Art in the Academy of Arts of the Soviet Union, opens up entirely new horizons for the western reader" (jacket). Very good folio, cloth & gilt boards in very good- illustrated dust jacket with white title to front panel and black title spine. Four closed tears and 2 open tears to edges of jacket.
